Final Update Oct 14th, 2007
Merry Meet, Merry Part
For those of you who have yet to experience the joy of FACEBOOK! I can only say that if you are really interested in hearing from old friends, you must sign up. You can search by the high school and year that you graduated, by name, email, it is a powerful social utility that is very well designed. This site has been up for 10 years, and although I won't take it off line, I like that idea that on face book you can all update yourselves, well and life is a tad busy these days.......

Merry Meet Again
I am a teacher at Ancaster High School and I am writing to ask for your help with regard to the above award. The Huycke-Rowe award was created by a former Ancaster High grad (Keith Thomson). The intent was to honour an Ancaster teacher each year at commencement. The Award is to be chosen by Ancaster Alumni. My problem is that I don't have a good way of contacting these people. Keith would very much like the nominations to come from grads that have been out of high school for a number of years. I am hoping that you may have a way of doing a mass mailing to those people registered on the Ancaster Factor web site. Our commencement is early in October. If you check the Ancaster High School web page (http://http://fcinternet.hwdsb.on.ca/~ancasterweb/dept/506stservices/stservicesindex.htm)you will be able to see the list of the award winners for the past several years. I would like very much to give as many people as possible the opportunity to nominate a deserving teacher from their days at Ancaster, and I am hoping you can help.
Please Click Here to Download the Nomination Letter
Thanks so much
Donna Hale

I'm Mike Bromley and I was born in 1959. My family moved to a bungalow on Iroquois Avenue in Mohawk Meadows in 1964. I attended Rousseau Public from Kindergarten to Grade six as did my younger brothers Steven & Peter as well as my sister Joanne. My teachers included Mrs. Cuttingham, Mrs Hurst, Miss Wilson, Miss Vearson, Ms Ostorsser and a male grade six teacher whose name escapes me. I was very active in baseball and hockey at spring valley arena. My father Ray coached several teams as well as umpired and sat on the executive. He was very active with the Optimist Club. We moved to Toronto in 1969 but the wonderful experiences I had in Ancaster through those five years keeps calling me back and I even arranged to get married at the Ancaster Mill in 1995. Friends that I hung with (whose names I can remember) included Greg Thompson, Bernie Bitcher, Jimmy Pellar, Errol Endert, Andrew Balecki, Harold Chataway, Julie Black, and Cathy Baldwin to name but a few. Many a happy afternoon was spent drinking a pop out front of Tony's Variety, catching tadpoles at Rocki's Pond, and stealing bales of hay from McNiven's field. I now live in Ajax and own and operate a few business's, my favorite of which is a sign shop that can be found at www.signsfromabove.com It would be cool to hear from anyone that grew up in Ancaster during the same period as me!

My mother (Beverly Oliver or Panas) and my aunt (Patricia Oliver or Panas) were sent to an orphanage in Ancaster from Windsor in the mid to late 1940's to perhaps the early 1950's. I would so GREATLY appreciate ANY AND ALL info (the name, the exact location, pictures, perhaps anyone from the orphanage, etc. etc.) anyone may have on this place or information on how I go about finding out this information. It is for family history and greatly desired. My mom and my aunt are now in their early 60's. This information would be wonderful to have. Thanks so much, hope to hear from you soon!!

I thought something should be posted in honour of Jeff Korobka a lifelong Ancaster resident (graduated from AHVS in 1984 I think). He passed away in April of 2005 from a brain aneurysm. He was a lineman on the Ancaster High Football team. He was the centre when I played (1980 to 85). He won lineman of the year and was always a great player and a great guy. I heard of his passing from other guys who were on the team back then. It was amazing to see how many people from the team (and others from high school) that came to his funeral who, like me, had probably not seen him much since graduation. It shows the Royal spirit lasts forever. There are people who knew him far better than I (like Kevin Rittenhouse --sp? ) who could give better details but I thought it might be nice to have some dedication to Jeff. Regards, Steve Ross (class of 85)

I attendend Ancaster High School as a charter student member from the first year it opened, when they were still putting windows in the walls and floor in the halls as we attended classes that September. I graduated in 1964 and attended McMaster University, graduating in History in 1968. I returned for a M.A. in 1971. For thirty years I taught History at the Galt Collegiate Institute in what is now Cambridge, Ontario. I was also very active during my teaching career in IO.S.S.T.F., serving as the President of Dostrict 24, as a Provincial Councillor, a member of the Parliamentary Council and as a Delegate to AMPA for 14 consecutive years. I also served as the full-time District Officer for four years from 1987-1991. In retirement I am very active in several branches of the Masonic Order, and continue to read and travel around the country in my "retroperson" Cadillac! I have good memories of my teen years in Ancaster, and made friends with such outstanding individuals as Al Stacey, Keith Wickens, Lex Parker, Mike Jefferson, Bill Atkinson and many others. As a teacher myself, I feel that first AH&VS staff was outstanding, for the most part, with Earl G. Marcy heading up Mathematics, Dean Fink eventually becoming Head of History, Gord MacLennan directing Modern Languages and a very great and gifted man and teacher, Harlold Robinson, as Head of English. I particularly recall one senior Geography lesson, where our teacher "shut the door and drew the shades" to tell us, although he was not "authorized to say so", that over vast periods of time, the CONTINENTS DRIFTED ABOUT, and did not always have their present positions in relation to each other!! Way to go, Mr. Bruce Dietz! .
My name is Jennifer Pendergrass. I live in Chandler, Arizona, USA. I have been helping my mother-in -law research her family history. Her great-ggrandfather James Wilson came from Carlow, Ireland in 1817, married Miss Susanna Shaver of Ancaster. We have located a Shaver family cemetary and from the 1877 Norfolk County Atlas, a small life sketch on James Wilson. Does anyone in Ancaster know of the Wilson or Shaver familes? I will gladly share any information we have gathered. Thanks so much.

I was friends with Ross Wooldridge and Steve Wenzelbach which continues today. I have been married to Joan (Roy) for almost 20 years. I lived in Ancaster from 1957 to 1963, graduated from Grange Public School in 1962 and did the first part of grade nine at AHVS before moving to Toronto. Enjoyed the dances at the Optimist Youth Center, sang in the choir and went to Brownies at Marshall Memorial and played the piano for the Sunday School, and then switched to St. John's in 1961. Played mostly with JoEllen Garner and Judy Willard, and remember several other friends and fun parties at their houses, dancing to 45's and playing games. Toronto kids hadn't learned to dance yet, and we had been doing it for years! I live in Carleton Place and work at Nortel Networks in Ottawa, have four children, two grandchildren and I'm still dancing.
My Dad, Donald Potter, managed the Hamilton Golf & Country Club. I lived in Ancaster and attended Grange Public School from 1957 to Feb 1963 when my parents had to haul me out of Mr. Middleton’s Grade 7 class on the day we moved to Toronto. He was, by far, the best teacher I ever had (grades 5 and 7) and Ancaster was a great place to grow up in with the little league, setting up pins at the bowling alley, caddying and tobogganing at the golf course, swimming in the new pool, riding bikes down the Mohawk trail and Jerseyville Road, "visiting" Whaley’s apple orchard, going to the Fall Fair, cubs, choir and square dancing at Marshall Memorial United Church and just having fun with a great bunch of friends like Andy Pratt, Joey Davidson, Rob Morris, Grapes, David Krantz, Jimmy Holder, Donny Edmunds, Tony Pigott, Greg Gray, Bob Simmons, Gayle MacAuley, Carol Eccles, Jane Spearing, and many more. I’m living now in the village of Lanark, Ontario with my two teenage children but my heart never left Ancaster. By the way, if you’ve got kids and they’re having a good time where you’re living, stay there. I t would be great to hear from anyone with similar fond memories of Ancaster.
I attended Ancaster High from 80-85. Now I'm living and working in the Ottawa area (working for federal government). I have three young children. My name is Lori Preston-Memme (nee Preston), and I used to live in Ancaster as a child. I was raised there from 1957 to 1967. I attended Fessenden Public School and my best friend was Kathy Hocura. It is Kathy that I am looking for now. The last time I saw her was in Oakville (where I resided from 1967-1986, (when I married and moved to Thorhill (where I currently reside). Kathy and I both lived on Floresta Crt. My next-door neighbours were the Kirkaldy's, (kids were Barbara, John and Lorne). At that time, the family across the street from us were the Barrons'...but I believe they moved to Richmond Hill. I am really trying to reach Kathy as I have recently discovered that life is too short... and friends too few. If anyone out there in Ancaster knows me or my family ... (Parents, Ed and Ann and kids Terri, Carol, Lori and Donna Preston)...please email me to say hi and hopefully help me find my friend. I graduated from the university of Guelph with a B.A. and my wife Leslie Sorochan whom I met in the Fine Arts department. After a brief career as a school bus driver and artist my wife convinced me to go to Teachers college. With time I overcame my distaste for the educational system and teach Special Ed. with my wife at St. Mary's High School. I actually really enjoy the job, not the system.....ba..uggh. Leslie and I have three children and live in Woodstock. I have kept in touch with many grads of the 81 era and I am on the 81 grad committee. Contact me at...chrisruland@yahoo.ca

Searching for Jennifer Pendergrass who wrote previously looking for info in her search for these relatives of mine from Ancaster....... James Wilson a minister from Ireland married into the prominent (Ancaster) SHAVER family (Susanna Shaver). He came from Ireland in 1817 and I wonder if he wrote the tale of the sailing of the 1817 voyage of the Mary & Bell.... 'A' James Wilson wrote it. VERY interesting for anyone who would like to see the difficulties of our relatives in their trips to N. America. A must read! Would love to hear from anyone with similar ties. |

I remember seeing some friends from Rousseau days when I attended a reunion at the high school in 1984. Time sure flies! |

Hi folks, In honor of Black History month we're proud to premiere The Property Principle. Written by former Ancaster Resident Michael Szombathy, this play is set in the mid 1800's and chronicles the story of a freed American slave who comes to Canada to make a new life for himself. It addresses social, political and personal issues. It's thought-provoking and of course entertaining! It also features veteran actors James Bradford and Carrie Fischer-Coppola. I've attached an electronic version of the promotional poster which has more info with regards to show dates & location. The NewRO is doing a segment on us as part of their "Breakfast" show on Wednesday February 5th (shameless plug!) Feel free to forward this to anyone who might be interested and come check it out if you get a chance.
Stay Fabulous | |||||||||||||
